Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing-In-Person and Virtual Worship

What happens when jingoistic nationalism adopts the clothing of religious symbols and language? The Southern Baptist leader Russell Moore has observed that in our times many congregants get upset when they hear Jesus’s words in the Sermon on the Mount because they consider his teachings to be “too weak” and “too liberal.” Of course, religious nationalism can be found in other cultures as well; Hindu nationalism in India, Buddhist nationalism in Sri Lanka, Jewish nationalism in Israel, Muslim nationalism in Iran, the list goes on and on. This Sunday we will reflect on when the virtue of patriotism can become an idolatry.
