Journey to Membership

We are so glad you’ve chosen to walk your path with us at TVUUC. Choosing to become a member represents a deeper connection with and commitment to your faith community.

Becoming a member

We offer three opportunities throughout the year to help you learn more about Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church (TVUUC) and Unitarian Universalism. These gatherings also give us a chance to get to know you and help you connect with our community. In addition, you are encouraged to meet with our minister or the New Member Coordinator, who would be happy to talk with you about what you are seeking in a faith community, ways to become involved at TVUUC, and any questions you may have about the congregation or Unitarian Universalism.

QUUestions

QUUestions is an informational meeting for people who want to learn more about TVUUC, Unitarian Universalism, and the path to membership. It is also open to current members who would like to deepen their understanding of TVUUC and strengthen their connection to our Unitarian Universalist community. Meetings are held on the last Sunday of each month at 12:30 p.m. and provide an opportunity to ask questions, explore our values and traditions, and learn about ways to become more involved.

Starting Point-An Introduction to the Unitarian Universalist Journey

“The central task of the religious community is to unveil the bonds that bind each to all. There is a connectedness, a relationship discovered amid the particulars of our own lives and the lives of others. Once felt, it inspires us to act for justice.” — Rev. Mark Morrison-Reed

Starting Point is a welcoming session for anyone interested in exploring Unitarian Universalism, whether you are considering membership or are already an established member of the congregation. It provides an opportunity to discover how Unitarian Universalism can enrich your life, reflect on your beliefs and values, deepen your understanding of our faith and community, and connect with others in meaningful conversation. Starting Point can help you decide whether UUism is right for you while encouraging personal growth and spiritual exploration. Most sessions are held from 1:00–3:00 p.m.; two sessions are offered via Zoom on Monday evenings from 6:00–8:00 p.m.

Landing Points

Landing Points is the sequel to Starting Point, though participation in Starting Point is not required. This session explores TVUUC’s programs, governance, and the many ways to become involved in the life of the congregation. Whether you are new to the church or a long-time member, Landing Points offers a deeper look at how TVUUC functions and how you can connect, contribute, and grow within our community. Sessions begin at 12:30 p.m. following the Sunday service.

Q: What are the requirements for joining TVUUC?

A: Any person, 16 years of age and older, who is in sympathy with the stated mission of TVUUC and with Unitarian Universalist principles and who has either participated in Starting Point or has had a one-on-one with the minister and/or the new member coordinator can join the TVUUC family

Q: What are the expectations of members?

A: Church membership opens the door to a wide range of volunteer opportunities – from serving on a committee or singing in our music program, to teaching in our religious education classes or tending our vibrant green spaces. When members engage with any group, they become an integral part of our community, build meaningful connections, and contribute to the common good. If you desire, we can help you find a group or groups that match your interests.

Every program we offer is supported by essential financial resources. We rely on contributions to pay our staff, maintain our building, and keep the lights on – just a few of the any ongoing needs. That’s why financial support, given according to each person’s ability, is a vital part of membership. As a former minister once said, “Our church is free because we pay for it.”

Please refer to our calendar for meeting times. If you have any questions you can contact our New Member Coordinator, Mark Mohundro, at . We look forward to helping you learn more about TVUUC, Unitarian Universalism, and opportunities for membership and involvement.
