Former Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has written a book called Faithful Presence that is in part about the coarsening of American politics. His rightwing critics dismiss him as Mr. Rogers. His leftwing critics say he isn’t forceful enough in opposing bad actors making him part of the problem and not the solution. Is it possible to be too nice? At what point do we say, “No more Mister Nice Guy.”
